Matt Doherty has played more than 40 times for Republic of Ireland, having made his debut as a substitute for Seamus Coleman in March 2018. Played on the left or further forward at times for his country, Doherty has been a regular in the squad since, scoring his first international goal against Denmark in November 2019. Now an experienced head in the Ireland set up, Doherty captained his country for the first time in March 2023, but Ireland have failed to reach a major tournament during his time in the senior group.
Doherty has built a reputation as a versatile and reliable player for Ireland, often adapting to different tactical roles depending on the teams needs. While naturally a right-back, he has been deployed as a wing-back and even in more advanced positions to maximize his attacking strengths. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively has made him a key figure in Ireland’s setup, even during challenging qualifying campaigns.
Despite Ireland’s struggles to qualify for major tournaments, Doherty remains one of the squad’s most experienced players, providing leadership on and off the pitch. His first international goal against Denmark in 2019 was a testament to his attacking instincts, arriving in the box to head home a crucial equalizer. Since then, he has continued to be an influential presence, wearing the captains armband for the first time in 2023—a moment that underlined his importance to the team.
